You may have some preconceptions of fraternities or sororities from popular movies that depict reckless party animals majoring in debauchery. These stereotypes make for good (and funny) movies, but the reality is that the Greek fraternities and sororities of today are reputable organizations that offer fellowship, academic support, leadership training, and participation in campus activities and philanthropy in the community.
“Oh, they’re just Greeks!”
Sigma Beta Rho and a community at large
Sigma Beta Rho participates with multiple National Affiliation Councils.
By setting the highest standards of membership, university administrations know that they have a partner in the success of our member organizations’ chapters. When issues arise affecting our community, we are able to mobilize and advocate as one strong, unified voice.
Sigma Beta Rho is a a founding member of the National APIDA Panhellenic Association or NAPA. Since NAPA’s inception, Sigma Beta Rho has been heavily involved with the council including past alumni contributing to its initial governance and constitution. NAPA is a collective group of leaders within the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American community who work together to advocate, collaborate, and educate our members and constituency for the greater good.
Sigma Beta Rho participates as a council member of the North American Inter-Fraternity Council (NIC), as part its Fraternity Growth Accelerator (FGA) Program. As a large council spanning most US colleges and universities, NIC FGA allows for promoting the unique promise of enhancing diversity and inclusion within the fraternal community.
It’s a Decision that you Shouldn’t Make in a Hurry
At Sigma Beta Rho, we don’t feel anyone should be rushed into a decision that’s this important. After all, joining a fraternity is a lifelong commitment.
Our recruitment process usually begins by receiving referrals from Sigma Beta Rho brothers, campus leaders and alumni who personally can recommend young men with panache and integrity. Unlike traditional “rush process” which takes place two weeks out of the year, we are constantly on the lookout for brilliant individuals all year long. We seek out scholars, future business leaders, athletes, many different kinds of campus leaders, and all-around gentlemen. Once we find men who are the real deal, we tell them our story and give them much needed fraternity information. We ask them about their ambitions and goals. At the end of it all, if we feel that it is right for both the parties, we start a friendship that may very well end up being brothers for life.
The Road Less Traveled
Even if you find out Sigma Beta Rho is not the perfect choice for you, we encourage you to get involved with Greek Life. The right fraternity (or sorority) can enrich your college years with rewarding service to the community, leadership training, social activities, academic achievement, and friendships that will last a lifetime.
