Statement on Multicultural Advocacy

New York, NY – Fraternal organizations, such as Sigma Beta Rho, were established to provide an environment of acceptance and advocacy where collegiate students could make an impact on society for the better. Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc., a premier national multicultural fraternity, is an organization with a strong foundation of cultural diversity and awareness. On behalf of the members of Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc., we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of those affected by the recent discriminatory acts. Sigma Beta Rho condemns the recent acts of violence and discrimination against the African American community. Our organization believes there is no place for such acts in a society that is composed of people from every background and culture in the world.

As the largest and only multicultural organization in the National APIDA Panhellenic Association (NAPA), we must acknowledge that our membership and organization are composed of diverse backgrounds and remain committed to addressing issues facing our membership on a daily basis. The national leadership of Sigma Beta Rho extends upon its members that no member or chapter engage in conduct that is inconsistent with our values and to uphold the commitment each brother has made to the advancement of our pillars: Society, Brotherhood, and Remembrance.

We stand in solidarity with the stance and statements released by NAPA and other member organizations, reminding each of our organizations’ members to not remain complicit to racial injustice.

About Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc.

Sigma Beta Rho (www.sigmabetarho.com) is a national multicultural fraternity. Our pillars of Society, Brotherhood, and Remembrance were established upon the formation of the Alpha chapter at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, on August 16, 1996. Our founders realized the unique promise of a Greek-lettered organization that instills positive values among its members, provides an avenue for leadership, and promotes self-betterment.

In the nascent stages, the founders understood that they must maintain a constant and growing nationwide network in order to truly manifest their organizational vision. Modern day Sigma Beta Rho has grown substantially since its inception. Sigma Beta Rho has founded chapters at over 70 colleges and institutions across the country, and currently maintains 35 active undergraduate chapters. This growth stems from a reputation of excellence, values-based programming, diversity among our brotherhood, and alignment with the ideals of many students who strive for a competitive edge before entering a post-globalized working world.
